20 YEARS AGO: NEWS FROM THE ISSUE OF MAY 27, 2004 Many voiced disappointment that little was accomplished in the Minnesota legislative session that recently ended. Local representatives did not disagree, though the level of their disappointment was different. Rep. Dean Urdahl, R-Grove City, said that when people say nothing was accomplished, they’re referring to the more “marquee issues” like balancing the budget, a bonding bill, sexual predator legislation and sports stadiums. But bills did pass that will affect lives of Minnesotans. Meanwhile, Sen. Steve Dille, R-Dassel, took a harsher view. “Obviously everyone is disappointed we didn’t get our job done,” Dille said. “We set out to balance the budget, pass a bonding bill and address the issue of sexual predators, and we struck out on all three. It’s an embarrassing and sad commentary on how we did, and I’d like to apologize to my district for not getting the job done. One party blames the other, but I’ll blame both parties. Things were way to partisan.”

Memorial Day and the Grand Army of the Republic have a long history. In fact, it was under the G.A.R. that Memorial Day started. The first Memorial Day was May 30, 1868, three years after the end of the U.S. Civil War. May 30 was selected because there were no major Civil War battles on that day, so no one group of soldiers was singled out. The date remained May 30 until 1968 when the holiday was changed to the last Monday in May.
