Local business provided bricks for many Litchfield buildings

1846: The founder and owner of Litchfield’s famous Ames Brickyard, Henry Ames, was born in Oswego, New York, on May 4, 1846. Builders chose his cream-colored bricks to build business blocks, schools, churches and residences throughout Meeker County and in at least three surrounding counties. Of course, Litchfield itself was Ames’ best customer. The Meeker County Courthouse (1885), G.A.R. Memorial Hall (1885), Litchfield Woolen Mill (1885), Masonic Temple building (1889) and Litchfield Opera House (1900) are a just few of the more prominent buildings constructed with Ames’ bricks. In the neighboring city of Willmar, Merchants Hotel and Kandiyohi County Bank used “Litchfield” brick, as did many home builders.

Addressing the need for special ed space

Litchfield School Board hears proposal for classroom space at Lake Ripley Elementary As the special education population grows at Lake Ripley Elementary School, district staff are taking steps to address space and staff needs. That’s what brought Principal Chris Olson to Monday’s Litchfield School Board meeting, where he presented a proposal for a new special education classroom to be built in part of the building’s former cafeteria space.

A visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Cornerstone Church in Litchfield and will continue one hour prior to the service.

A season that’s all about baseball

After playing host to state tourney last season, Blues turn their focus to the game in 2024 Optimist Park became a kind of town baseball mecca last summer as it drew thousands of fans and curiosity seekers. A midseason visit by FOX 9 television’s Town Ball Tour in late June, followed by the Minnesota Baseball Association State Tournament in late August through Labor Day made the Litchfield ballpark the place to be — not necessarily for the balls and strikes and strategy of the game.
