Kurt Richard Birkemeyer, the son of Richard and Doris (Hillmeyer), was born in Cokato on February 3, 1955. He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1973. He went on to college and graduated from University of Minnesota. He worked many different jobs over the years, including paving, curb and gutter, landscaping of golf courses, and over-the-road truck driving.
