Maybe vitriol in Congress isn’t as bad as it seems?

If you’ve followed media coverage of Congress over the past few years, it’s been hard to escape two impressions: Not much gets done there, and members spend a lot of their time tearing into one another. We can argue about the first — certainly, recent Congresses have been less productive than their predecessors — but now there’s hard evidence that the second impression is just plain wrong.The vast majority of members, it turns out, focus on substance and policy, not on personal attacks.

Donna Marie Kotlarz, 74, died unexpectedly September 8, 2024, in her home in Monticello. She was born September 20, 1949, in Heron Lake. She was the daughter of Herman and Pauline (Alexander) Appel of Heron Lake and was the foster daughter of Nat and Mary Ann (Prondzinski) Miller of Winona. Donna graduated from Winona High School. Following graduation, she went on to beauty school at Winona Area Vocational-Technical Institute and worked as a beautician at JCPenney in Winona. She married her high school sweetheart Gary Kotlarz on October 5, 1974. Donna later worked as a para at Hutchinson public schools for several years where she made many friends. In addition to her parents, and foster mother Mary Ann Miller, she is preceded in death by her sisters: Lisa Pitts and Joyce Barron; brother: Michael Miller; and nephew: Joseph Villnow. Wayne L. Anderson, 77, of Litchfield, formerly of Cosmos, passed away on Monday September 9, 2024, at St. Cloud Hospital. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Church of St. Philip in Litchfield. A visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday September 13, 2024, at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral and Cremation Service in Litchfield and continued one hour prior to the service at the church. Wayne Lee Anderson, the son of Donald and Irene (Wibstad) Anderson was born on July 31, 1947, in Alexandria. He lived on a farm near Garfield and Norseland before moving to Brooten in 1960. He graduated from Brooten High School in 1965. His basic training was at Ft Leonard Wood, Mo., E-4-2, April-June 1966. He studied Arabic (Iraqi) at Presidio Of Monterey, DLIWC, July 1966 and had a voluntary drop December 1966. In 1967 he trained as clerk-typist under TRAPP program Presidio of San Francisco 1967 and was the Clerk at Special Services in 1977.
