Hutchinson residents’ diverse backgrounds were celebrated Sunday when more than 150 people gathered at Masonic/ West River Park for the second Belonging Begins With Us. The event was part of Welcoming Week, an annual event featuring thousands of celebrations nationwide since 2012.
125 YEARS AGO: 1899 An uncommonly large acreage of sorghum cane was planted this year and, as the crop is a fine one, people hereabouts can, if it comes to a pinch, snap a cane and sweeten their systems with sorghum and saccharine. A citizen begs the Leader to make “The hardest kind of kick” on the people who leave their wagons in the alleys, which he says are often so blockaded that it is next to impossible to drive through them with a load of hay.

Hutchinson celebrated its annual homecoming early this year. Spirit Week activities included a bean bag tournament, pepfest/coronation, Wall of Fame honorees, parade, football game and a dance.
Friday and Saturday saw Library Square and adjacent First Avenue bursting to the seams with lookers and shoppers at the 50th annual Hutchinson Arts & Crafts Festival. There were times that the people were so thick in the aisles that it was hard to get close to a booth to see the merchandise.
It was an autumn day in Hutchinson, Minnesota. The year was 1912, and townspeople had reason to celebrate.
Common Cup Ministry is once again collecting new and gently used winter coats and gear through Oct. 6 for their free distribution.
