20 YEARS AGO: NEWS FROM THE ISSUE OF MARCH 3, 2005 After family and friends, flushing toilets and running water were what some returning soldiers missed most while in Iraq. “It will be nice to brush my teeth with running water again instead of bottled water,” said Spc. Tim Krouth of Litchfield. Krouth was one of 28 National Guard soldiers from the Alpha Company 682nd Engineer Battalion based in Litchfield who returned home Tuesday morning. Alpha Company was deployed to Iraq in December 2003. Soldiers spent about 12 months in the country, building medical treatment centers and a detainment facility near the city of An Najaf, said Sgt. David Kauppi, who works at the Litchfield Armory base.
The gospel reading many of us heard on Sunday was Luke 6:27-38. The Old Testament teaching was to love your countryman. Jesus teaches love even of your enemy. How dare Jesus suggest that we love those who might even be seeking to kill us? It doesn’t sound rational. Jesus argues that it is not extraordinary to love only those who love us as even sinners do that.
