LHS STUDENTS OF THE WEEK

Litchfield High School teachers selected Britney Valdez and Jacob Kadelbach as Students of the Week for May 20-26. Valdez, a sophomore, was nominated by science teacher Jason Louwagie, who praised her for coming to class with a great attitude every day.

Johnson announces another run for Meeker County District 3 seat

Meeker County Commissioner Paul M. Johnson announced last week he will seek another term as the District 3 representative on the Board of Commissioners. “Four years ago, you allowed me to serve you as your county commissioner, and I am proud of the progress and accomplishments made during my tenure,” Johnson said. “I have worked hard to serve your best interests and make Meeker County a better place to live, work and raise a family.”

G.A.R. played role in Memorial Day history, locally and nationwide

Memorial Day and the Grand Army of the Republic have a long history. In fact, it was under the G.A.R. that Memorial Day started. The first Memorial Day was May 30, 1868, three years after the end of the U.S. Civil War. May 30 was selected because there were no major Civil War battles on that day, so no one group of soldiers was singled out. The date remained May 30 until 1968 when the holiday was changed to the last Monday in May.

It’s showtime!

While dusk — the darkest shade of twilight — was a good hour or so away, it didn’t stop a line from forming. The gates were padlocked but a couple of cars were able to roll onto the access road while those that came after started parking along the shoulder of State Highway 22.

A ‘Unified’ effort to achieve success

Track and field meet brings opportunity for special needs, general education students Broad smiles and excited shouts were the order of the day as a group of Litchfield students competed in an invitational track meet May 8 at Hutchinson High School. Like similar events, winning was important to the competitors — really important to the most passionate among them.
