20 YEARS AGO: NEWS FROM THE ISSUE OF DEC. 9, 2004 Litchfield City Council answered the question about the cityâs law enforcement structure Monday, but was faced with another minutes later. The council did not vote, but agreed by consensus not to pursue a contract for law enforcement with Meeker County. Minutes later, the council unanimously accepted the resignation of Police Chief Bruce Dicke, who announced he would leave the position Feb. 25. The decision on county- city law enforcement came about six months after the City Council appointed two of its members and Dicke to a committee that also included two Meeker County commissioners and Sheriff Mike Hirman. The goal was for members to discuss the pros and cons of a law enforcement department united under the Sheriffâs Department. Council members Greg Gilbertson and Barb Altringer offered two opinions on the joint effort, with Gilbertson saying he thought it might be worth considering a shared administration and Altringer, in effect, saying that the council should not try to fix what was not broken.
